Bob want brains!

The Memphis Zombie season is fast approaching and this year’s event will take place Friday, May 28th starting at 6:30pm (come early if you want your makeup done). You’ve probably seen me pimping the event on twitter for the past 2 months or so. From what I’ve read, this year is supposed to be bigger and better than the past events. Memphis Zombies have a complete run down on what to expect. It will blow your mind, and I’d definitely recommend you take advantage of the spectacle that is Memphis Zombie Walk.

If you’re trying to shed some weight from the winter and want to make sure you don’t get taken by the upcoming apocalypse, Wired Magazine has put together a zombie workout routine. It focuses on lots of jumps, hurdles and runs to strengthen your legs and core in case you need to breakaway or hurdle buildings and barriers. Here’s a synopsis of it.

Survival Workout

1. Climb
Zombies aren’t very spry, so climbing over barriers is a key evasive maneuver. Practice on a wall that’s a little taller than you.
Extra training: Pull-ups, bench dips
Muscles worked: Core, triceps, deltoids

2. Free Fall
Jumping off a roof may provide temporary respite, but break a leg on landing and you’re dinner. Cushion the impact by extending your legs and touching down on the balls of your feet. Then get up and make tracks.
Extra training: Toe raises
Muscles worked: Calves, hamstrings

3. Hurdle
Run at a sturdy obstacle—park bench, subway turnstile, picnic table. Dive forward, placing both hands on the object, and swing your legs up to your chest. The momentum will propel you over.
Extra training: Air squats, push-ups, sit-ups
Muscles worked: Pecs, delts, quads

4. Breakaway
“Extricating yourself from a zombie’s grasp uses every muscle in your body,” says Rich Gatz of ZombieFit. Practice by lifting and tossing a big object like a tractor tire.
Extra training: Resistance running, weighted pull-ups and push-ups
Muscles worked: Lats, core, hamstrings

For the 3rd year in a row, I’ll be taking part in 48Hour Launch or what was formerly known as Startup Weekend Memphis. This year, the event begins on the evening of Friday, March 5 and ends with show and tell on the afternoon of Sunday, March 7th. The entire weekend is a set of orchestrated madness where participants pitch their latest and greatest ideas, folks vote and form teams and then get to work on getting the business off the ground in the short span of 48 hours.

48Hour Launch is one of the most unique entrepreneurship programs in the country. People of all skill levels and areas including marketing, development and design are encouraged to attend. Last year, we had some amazing projects come out of the weekend including Mark’s Menus, The Roll Play and Cheezy Weezy. I’ve personally had the chance to meet and work with so many people who I normally wouldn’t. Its great exploring new ideas with people who are passionate making Memphis the best.

I hope you’ll join us for 48Hour Launch over the first weekend in March at Emerge Memphis Launchpad. Get your tickets today!

But there’s a twist: Presenters see the randomly chosen slides for the first time when they’re presenting. Presentations are on the clock and off the cuff.
I’ll admit that there is a lot of stuff out there in terms of social media. Some of it’s good and some of it’s bad. Here are some of the folks I’ve found who actually understand social media and its application.

Chris Brogan – Chris advises businesses, organizations and individuals on how to use social media and social networks to build relationships. He builds great content and is one of my must-read feeds every morning. It’s almost like I think of a question about social media, it’s then transmitted wirelessly to his brain and posted to his blog the next day. He’s always been very responsive and helpful in answering any and every question I had. For me, Chris is better than those little fried onion crisps that your mom used to put on green bean casserole. What I want a Social Media Expert to Know, His best advice on social media and 50 ideas on using twitter for business are some of my favorite posts.

Dosh Dosh – Maki offers internet marketing, blogging tips and social media strategies for entrepreneurs, marketers and small business owners. The key to effective viral marketing is emotional engagement, his three-part strategy on developing tactical knowledge on social media websites and this post on relevance and distribution; 2 essential factors in social media marketing made my day.

Darren Rowse - Problogger is probably best known for his tips on helping you make money from your blog, but Darren also has a great grasp on social media. Some of my favorite articles are Blogging Tips for Beginners, 21 Tips to Pitching Bloggers and 5 Lesson Learned Launching your Next Venture Using Social Media.

Jeremiah Owyang – Jeremiah is a web strategist and analyst at Forrester Research. He discusses the tools that allow businesses to connect with their customers. If I had a nickle for every amazing web post he’s written, I’d be a rich man. Explaining the social graph to executives and his list of web marketing must be tagged and passed on.

Beth Kanter - I know a lot of my readers come from non-profit organizations. Beth specializes in training non-profits and individuals in effective use of social media. It doesn’t get much better than Beth in the non-profit space. Check out Open Thread: How does my non-profit organization get started with social media! What should we do first?, How to Develop a Social Media Plan in 5 Easy Steps or her collection of Social Media How-to Screencasts.

Memphis Social Media Experts

* Dave Barger - Dave puts on Social Media Breakfast Memphis, runs LunaWeb and has been instrumental in Startup Weekend and BarCamp Memphis. He’s always on the cutting edge and looking for new ways to use social media in business.
* Daniel Pritchett – I met Daniel at Social Media Breakfast and am always interested in what he has to say on his Sharing at Work blog. How Twitter is affecting major brands online and Improving participation by simplifying sharing are 2 posts I really enjoyed.

Did I leave someone important off this list? Let me know in the comments.

Check out the image below, its from Rhodes College. While looking for some adult education classes I came across their form for a free class catalog. The only (and big) thing wrong with it is that it requires a CAPTCHA to process your request. The issue in this example is that the CAPTCHA image is broken, so the user will never be able to submit the form.

There are too many tools available today for this not to work. Instead of playing the $350 for the class, I guess I’ll just find some videos on YouTube. Do you think Rhodes will notice?
