The kids are actually sort of alright

It’s part of the American way to get a lot of self-worth from your job. Meanwhile, one of the reasons there aren’t enough of those jobs out there is that America no longer makes enough stuff. Young people feel that void, intrinsically. Making stuff is what got us smiles from our parents and top billing in refrigerator art galleries. And since we are, as a generation, more addicted to positive reinforcement than any before us, and because we have learned firsthand the futility of finding that affirmation through our employers, we have returned to our stuff-making ways, via pursuits easily mocked: the modern-day pickling, the obsessive Etsying, the flower-arranging classes, the knitting resurgence, the Kickstarter funds for art projects of no potential commercial value. The millions upon millions who upload footage of themselves singing or dancing or talking about the news to YouTube. Of course, funny videos and adorable hand-sewn ikat pillows aren’t the only kind of stuff that people are making as a way of coping with harsh economic realities—meth, for instance, comes to mind. But putting aside those darker enterprises, this is a golden age for creativity and knowledge for their own sakes. Our pastimes have become our expressions of mastery, a substitute for the all-consuming career.

Great article in New York Magazine about the Millennial generation and their rather self-absorbed, pampered and resilient ways. It’s worth your time to read the complete piece.

Flowers Everywhere With This Ikea Desk Hack

Ikea Hacker has a cool project in which you modify an Ikea desk to install a flower vase under it.  Its supposed to make it look as if the flower comes out of the table. Instructions below for the brave.

  1. Used mayonnaise bottle lid on the under surface of table with screw.
  2. Drill a hole in table and lid. The Vika Furuskog table top from Ikea was used in this example.
  3. Fill water on the bottle.
  4. Screw bottle.

5 minutes.

OPINION NEEDED: What Should I Do With This Site?

I’ve been struggling in the past few months with the future of One Half Amazing.com.  Sitting down, cranking out interesting and valuable content and then adding genuine thought behind it has become more and more of a chore.  The site has given me many opportunities to meet new people and has opened lots of doors, but I feel like I’m almost a slave to it now.

There is so much going on in the digital marketing realm, but I’m becoming more nonchalant about it all.  I’m excited, but I don’t have any opinions or strong feelings towards any of it.   Maybe I’m just in a lull and in need of something to jump start my engine. I’m not even sure any of that makes sense.

I come to you today in need of some advice.  What should I do with this site? Some options I’ve considered are;

  • Keep the site, but post less often (to the tune of 1x per month) or just post small snippets of content (links, videos, slides, etc).
  • Wait out the lull I’m feeling and hopefully I’ll get inspiration in the near-future.
  • Bring on more contributors to to the site and take on a different role in the site’s future.
  • Sell the site to someone who sees value in it
  • Totally flip the site in a different direction, use it more as a personal site for family and friends, posting things beyond marketing.

So wherever you may read this, I ask you to leave a comment, offer a suggestion or give some sort of feedback.  I write this for the users; you determine the direction it goes. Thanks so much!
