Very cool news indeed about the merge. I've been debating how to incorporate a community into my blog The Success Center. At first I was just going to do a page with Facebook Fan and Google Connect widgets, point out some blogs I visit, and guest posts. Then I thought about adding the Automattic P2 theme as a separate "twitter like" community. (http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/p2) I certainly didn't want to take the time to do a ning site, so I think this will suite my needs well.

Let em know when you start testing it. I'll share my results with you as well.
  • Cool thing is that WordPress and WordPress MU are merging together this Spring (March-ish?) and you'll have all the MU functionality within the regular WordPress install. Soon you won't have to install WordPress every time you want to create a site, but rather just use one install and away you go.

Like you, I've bee apprehensive about MU because of the more technical setup, but trying out a version of BuddyPress using this method is on my radar. I still debate if I should leverage existing social networks or create my own, but I can see how it would be beneficial in certain situations. I'll let you know how it turns out.
