Foursquare users are checking out

In July 2010, Foursquare had 2 million users performing 1 million check-ins per day. By the end of the year, that number had risen to 5 million users performing 2 million check-ins per day. Impressive growth, yet this means check-ins per user declined from 0.5 per person to 0.4. It also suggests that many of those five million users aren\'t active.

I know my check-ins have dramatically declined in the past 6 months. I might check in once or twice a week just to see who is nearby.

The news is worse for Facebook Places and Yelp (who already had huge user bases before implement check-in services). See this chart from Business Insider.

I’m not sure I can put my finger on the reason for this backslide. Did the game of collecting badges grow weary on users? Are the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla geared towards early-adapters? Has the value of checking-in declined?

Display Your Foursquare Check-ins on Google Maps in 2 Steps

Here is how to view your view your Foursquare check-ins on Google Maps.

  1. Visit your foursquare feeds page. Right click and copy the KML link  (no need to download it).
  2. Visit Google Maps and paste your copied link into the search box. Hit enter.

You can also add “?count=100″ (or any number that you’d like to see) to the end of the URL (after .KML) to see a specific number of check-ins.  About Foursquare also has some cool tricks on tracking your check-ins with Google Calendar and Google Earth.

Check-In To The Foursquare App Store

Foursquare launched their shiny new app store today.  It only has 10 apps to start, but includes games, visualization and augmented reality apps as well as a few that tie all your location-based services (like Gowalla, Brightkite) together in one place.  Each app has it’s own page that gives a short blurb and screenshot of the application.

I’m also glad to see the first Foursquare iPad app is available.  It will set you back $2.

Got A Business? Show Off Your Best Customer With A Foursquare Widget

PlaceWidget gives an interactive widget to add to your company’s website for showing off your best Fousquare guest.  What a great way to spread the word about your business and offer up special deals to customers, and to coax them to check in regularly.

The widget displays the Foursquare mayor along with their picture. It also shows tips for that venue that Foursquare users leave about what to try, buy, or do at that particular location.

The widget is easy to setup.  Find your Foursquare business location, determine your widget size and the site spits out some Javascript code to paste into your site.  Right now, they only offer skyscraper size banners, but a WordPress plugin is rumored to be coming soon that will allow you to customize your widget.  via TechCrunch
